ABOUT THE SERIES:
Symbols form the very basis of humankind’s ability to communicate, and although they are often the most basic of markings, they hold great power over us as individuals and groups large and small. Their meanings can change in different cultures and contexts, but the most powerful symbols tend to be the oldest, and perhaps that power comes from the ability of a symbol to give us an instant connection to our ancestors. Religious symbols and language bind great numbers of humans together in a common understanding of shared beliefs, while scientific symbols and mathematical equations tie us all to the immutable laws of time and space. Somewhere between religion and science lies the symbolism of alchemy, humanity’s first attempt to quantify the material of the world and the processes that shape it. Though the original context is obsolete, the ideograms I use in the pieces still symbolize the forces that govern the earth, and the materials that shape it, for as long as we wish them to.
